What is Divine Providence?

A. The universe is a symphony; G-d is its conductor. Every atom, every breath of wind, every grain of sand is tracked and guided by the ultimate supercomputer—G-d. This is Divine Providence—the concept that G-d didn’t create the universe and then step back to let it run by itself, but that He remains actively involved, pulling levers, pushing buttons and flipping switches behind the scenes.

 

B. Why does He do that? A classic Chassidic story explains. A Rebbe once saw a leaf fall out of a tree and drift to the ground. He asked the leaf, "Why did you drop out?" The leaf answered, "I don’t know—my branch shook me off." The rebbe asked the branch why he shook, and was referred to the wind. The wind didn’t have an answer as to why he blew at the branch, except that he had been let loose by his angel master. The angel, in turn, told the rebbe he had received orders from G-d Himself to get things windy. So the rebbe posed the question to G-d, and was told: "Pick up the leaf." The rebbe lifted it off the earth… to find a little worm sheltering in the shade the leaf created underneath. Everything—even the falling of a leaf—happens for a reason, and it is up to us and our minds to find or acknowledge the stewardship of G-d behind it all.

C. Why doesn’t He get more involved, or less involved? Well, if G-d got more involved in daily life, He’d have to start performing miracles. And assuming a more dominant, aggressive role in directing the universe’s doings is in direct reverse proportion to our Free Choice: the less G-d is openly involved, the more freedom we have, and the more G-d is openly involved, the less freedom we have. In other words, if G-d were to shoot lightning bolts at bad guys, would we have the free choice to do bad things? Nope. But on the other hand, neither does G-d want to be totally uninvolved. So he doesn’t control people—he controls nature. If, for example, He knows that the place you’re headed for is just not for you, he won’t stop you with a lightning bolt—but He might send you a flat tire.

What is a Hebrew name?

A. The giving of a name should be looked upon as a great responsibility that involves serious consideration by the parents. In many places in Kabbalah and Chassidut it is explained how the name by which something is called is the conduit through which its life-force is infused. A Hebrew name is your spiritual call sign, a title that reflects your unique character traits and G-d given gifts.

Therefore, the Arizal says, "When a person is born and his father and mother give him his name...the Holy One puts into their mouth the particular name required for that soul".

B. Since a Jewish name functions as a spiritual conduit, channeling spiritual energy from G-d into the soul and body, critically ill individuals are sometimes given an additional Hebrew name, which serves as a spiritual bypass operation funneling fresh spirituality around their existing name and into their bodies. With the influx of spirituality, the body is given renewed vigor to heal itself.

C. Jewish names also serve many practical functions. A person is called up to the Torah by his (and his father's) Jewish name. All religious marriage and divorce documents must contain the Jewish names of the husband and wife. When a person is ill, prayers are especially helpful if they are said using the patient's Jewish name. Even after a person passes on, the Jewish name plays an important role -- it is mentioned during every Yizkor service.

Can you describe a soul?

The Jew is created for and with a special mission: to bring G-dliness into this materialistic world. The Jewish soul is the energy given to the Jew to be able to carry out this mission.

A person is known as a "miniature world". The soul can perhaps be explained as a "microcosm of G-d."  By allowing his G-dly soul to be expressed within his own existence the Jew can bring G-d into all of existence.

The Hebrew word for "world" is Olam, which means concealment. The nature of the world is to conceal G-d's existence. Many ask how we even know G-d exists. The Jew may ask the same thing. He may wonder how will I ever bring G-d into a world that wishes to deny Him. He may question the feasibility of his mission.

That's when his soul kicks in and says "of course G-d can enter the world; as a matter of fact, I am already here, just reveal me, and let me be exposed".

It is this soul that gives the Jew the power to be G-dly in a human world, and supernatural in a natural universe.

So the next time you face adversary, feel ostracized, or question your ability to carry out your Divine mission of Judaism, remember, G-d is not only with you, He is in you.
